Sydserf: House Extension, East Lothian

Our clients needed a place apart from, but connected to, their small rural home to accommodate visits from their grown children’s young families.

Their new extension has a distinctly house-like identity of its own.  Through its form, scale and materiality, it is sympathetic to the existing house without deferring to it.  The cedar shingle cladding is texturally and tonally alike to the existing pantiles and render.  White painted window frames continue the house’s domestic language.

Although modest in scale, with a footprint of little more than 30sqm, it is tightly planned and spatially rich with double height living space overlooked by a sleeping platform, a tall bunkroom and a deep lightwell above the shower.  The interior is finished with raw plaster and polished concrete.  Only the window frames are painted.
